Mission and Strategy

Clarity of mission and strategy are essential for effective nonprofit organisations. The hardest part of nonprofit strategy is determining the intended impact of the organisation. The intended impact of an organisation should include specific, realistic, measurable and time bound statements of what it intends to achieve and how it will know when the intentions have been achieved.

Our role varies enormously. With some organisations we have had a highly intensive involvement. With others we have worked in much more of a facilitative role. Our role can involve a mixture of:

Case Study: Royal British Legion

The Legion wanted a new strategic plan to guide the development of its welfare services. Expenditure was predicted to grow from £25m to £40m over the next five years.

We began by undertaking a major research project that documented in depth and for the first time, the welfare needs of the ex-Service community in the UK, which is currently just over 10 million people. We also modelled the future size of the community by age group and identified the welfare needs of each group to 2020.

We then worked with senior welfare managers to conduct a strategic review and develop a strategic plan, consulting widely in and around the organisation at each stage of its development.
