Mission and Strategy
Clarity of mission and strategy are essential for effective nonprofit organisations. The hardest part of nonprofit strategy is determining the intended impact of the organisation. The intended impact of an organisation should include specific, realistic, measurable and time bound statements of what it intends to achieve and how it will know when the intentions have been achieved.
We help organisations and their funders to:
- Design or enhance their overall architecture for strategic and
operational planning - Carry out strategic reviews
- Develop strategic plans
- Challenge plans to make them more realistic and achievable
- Develop impact plans
- Prepare business plans for particular services and functions.
Our role varies enormously. With some organisations we have had a highly intensive involvement. With others we have worked in much more of a facilitative role. Our role can involve a mixture of:
- Being the ‘guardian’ of the whole process
- Masterminding large scale workshops
- Facilitating key meetings of planning teams
- Producing strategic and business plans.
Case Study: Royal British Legion
The Legion wanted a new strategic plan to guide the development of its welfare services. Expenditure was
predicted to grow from £25m to £40m over the next five years.
We began by undertaking a major research project that documented in depth and for the first time, the welfare
needs of the ex-Service community in the UK, which is currently just over 10 million people. We also modelled
the future size of the community by age group and identified the welfare needs of each group to 2020.
We then worked with senior welfare managers to conduct a strategic review and develop a strategic plan,
consulting widely in and around the organisation at each stage of its development.

"The demands on the Legion are growing year on year and we must be prepared to meet them in partnership with
others in the sector. Compass Partnership helped us to identify those needs and to plan accordingly for the
future." Sue Freeth
