Board Performance Reviews
Over the last few years we have developed an approach to assessing board performance and agreeing improvement plans designed specifically for medium sized and large voluntary organisations.
It is low cost and highly effective. It involves each board member spending an hour completing a detailed performance questionnaire.
The questionnaire is usually also completed by members of the Senior Management Team as they see the board in operation and can provide a semi-independent check on performance.
We analyse the results and use them to catalyse debate and decisions about actions to improve performance.
Levels of board reviews
The service we offer comes in three levels:
- A Standard Assessment — using our standard performance questionnaire
- A Tailored Assessment — where the questions are carefully tailored to suit your organisation’s circumstances
- A Tailored Assessment and Board Workshop — where we facilitate a workshop with the board (and senior management) to review the findings and agree actions to enhance performance.
The questionnaire
The questions cover all aspects of board performance including:
- The clarity of mission, strategy and the monitoring strategic performance
- The performance of key governance functions
- The performance of the Board as a team
- The performance of Committees
- The Board’s skills and experience
- The conduct of Board meetings
- The overall contribution that the board makes
- The top three issues for the board in the future.
It is compatible with the Code of Governance for the Voluntary Sector.
The questionnaire can also be used to elicit feedback on board members own and their colleagues’ performance. This is given confidentially and anonymously to the Chair to provide validated information for the Chair to use in individual 360° feedback sessions with board members.
The questionnaires can be completed on paper or on screen.
