Case Study: Futurebuilders England

Futurebuilders England is a unique £150m government-backed fund offering support and investment to third sector organisations to deliver public services. We offer a combination of loans, grants and professional support to build the capacity of third sector organisations who want to deliver better public services. Most organisations have never borrowed before, so we provide sustained, flexible and individual support to ensure our investees have the right financial, managerial and governance structures to take on a loan and successfully compete for contracts in the public sector.

Futurebuilders wants to ensure it has the highest possible standards of governance. Since our inception in 2004, we have conducted regular Board performance reviews, whereby all members Board and SMT (Senior Management Team) complete a confidential questionnaire on the performance of the Board as a whole. Each Board member also reports on his/her own performance, as well as that of every other member of the Board. This provides a rich source of data for individual performance reviews with the Chair. The Chair and the Vice Chair review each other‘s performance.

Quote from Richard Gutch, Chief Executive
'We have been very pleased with the work Compass Partnership has done with our Board. They have brought real added value and helped our Board learn how to ensure continued improvement in the governance of Futurebuilders.'
