Mike Hudson – Founder & Director

Mike Hudson worked for Friends of the Earth as Local Groups Co-ordinator, a campaigner and subsequently as Administrative Director.

Following an MBA from London Business School he worked as a Management Consultant with the Addison Group in the UK and the USA.

In 1982 he began doing consultancy assignments for the Chairs and Chief Executives of disability organisations and subsequently established Compass Partnership as a firm of consultants working exclusively with nonprofit organisations and their funders.

Mike has undertaken assignments for many of the top 500 UK charities and played an innovative role in the sector, introducing and popularising strategic planning and benchmarking and more recently developing new approaches to assessing the performance of governing boards.

He has also worked for many government departments, helping to shape policy and funding programmes for the voluntary sector.

Mike has been a Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics where he undertook a major research project into the management and governance of nonprofit organisations in the USA. He is currently a Vissiting Fellow at the Cass Business School at City University.

Mike‘s book Managing Without Profit (Directory of Social Change, 2002) was first published in 1995. It has been translated into two other languages and sold over 16,000 copies. His latest book Managing at the Leading Edge (Directory of Social Change, 2003) reports on findings from his research in the USA. The USA version of the book was published by Jossey Bass in 2005.
