Different Types of Strategic Alliances

Strategic alliances can be considered on a spectrum ranging from informal collaboration (which hardly merits the term strategic alliance) to group structures and finally merger. Alliances at the left hand end of the spectrum allow organisations to maintain a great deal of autonomy. Moving across the different types (to the right) requires greater commitment and leads to greater integration.

The type of alliance chosen for a particular venture needs to suit the circumstances.
